Looking through the camera lens on those early morning starts when on walks with the dogs allows the inhalation of calm and tranquillity. I can imprint that state of mind by sharing this imagery through the Instagram account, encouraging our mental well-being and assisting others with the experience of glimpsing the beauty that surrounds us—something profoundly healing and personally restorative in a much-mirrored approach to the land.
Learning to ‘see’ through my camera and waiting for the barn owls to emerge lets me look around at the movement of the grasses, the butterflies, and the flowers they touch; I immerse ‘in’ nature. Momentarily I become the prey when the lens picks up the talons and majesty circling above—the narrative shifts when I move. I become the hunter, capturing the air dance that plays out, letting the camera technology take the strain to allow me to focus on the image – the creativity.
Taking the time to stop and study the plants in more detail helps connect us to the land and nature. Using different recording methods, each with a different perspective, speed and result, our connection grows more profound.
Through a hand lens for closer observation, careful pressings, preserving nature in alcohol for referencing, observing and recording in watercolour, and with a camera in the palms of hands, we capture these varying paced moments in time.
A legacy that I share; through photographing the land, I can see the changes in my relationship with our surrounding environment and my understanding of my place there.
Observing the detail helps create a visual document of this journey, for how this landscape has been restored and is now reclaiming its life.
